It's nearly twenty years after the events that took place in Tinna's Promise; and the human population is still floundering; decimated by the Dragons and their inexplicable attacks.  After the sudden retreat, the humans of Oromoii are left to salvage what little remains of their world.

Southwards, sensing a power vacuum, the Thran are stirring.  Despite the fact that the Throne of Oromoii still exists, it is weakened and frail; and the Thran see opportunity; their vast military is being prepared for the possibility of an invasion.

Tinna is poised to become leader of Thamatoc.  She has had a daughter; and Taneth is working to help rebuild some of the institutions that have been taken from them from the catastrophic Dragon burnings.  Life is quite peaceful...

..until Na-AiSerral arrives.

She comes to Thamatoc with a cortege of Thran she-warriors and a mess of ill-intentions.  Tinna, who has faced a dragons, wars and murders without batting an eyelash, knows she truly has something to fear in this woman. 

She is Tinna's mother.
